Tallow is rendered animal fat — we use grass-fed beef tallow. It's high in fatty acids that closely mirror the ones already in human skin, which is why tallow bars tend to feel deeply conditioning rather than just moisturizing. Historically it was the standard for soap before vegetable oils became cheap and plentiful.

Plant-based bars use oils like olive, coconut, or castor. They cleanse well and are a great fit for anyone who prefers to avoid animal products entirely. Our Extra Gentle line is fully plant-based.

Neither is objectively better — it comes down to your skin and your preferences. If your skin is dry or depleted, tallow often performs noticeably well. If you're vegan or simply prefer plant-based, our milk bars do the job without it.
